FYI – I live in Sarteneja and just wanted to update you on bus schedule changes:

Departs from the Swing Bridge (NOT the bus terminal) in Belize City M-F 10:30a, 12pm, 4pm, 5pm.
Sat, departs 10:30am, 12pm, 4pm. No bus on Sundays.

Same bus passes through Orange Walk, stopping across from the St. Christopher Hotel (NOT the bus terminal). Leaves Orange Walk around 12pm, 1:30pm, 5:30pm, and 6:30pm.

Buses leave Sarteneja M-F 3:30a, 4:30am, 5:30a, 6:30a. But it is a good idea to check at the bus depot the day before to confirm how many buses are leaving the next day.

On Sat and sometimes during the week and sometimes on Sunday, there is a bus to Chetumal which leaves the village around 6am and returns through Orange Walk (2:30p) at 4:30p

Hi, thanks for the information. This has been really helpful when traveling in Belize.. Just to give you up update of the route between Belize City to Chetumal. I took a bus from Belize City Novelo’s bus terminal at 10:15 AM (I’m not sure about the full time schedule) to Chetumal for $10BZ, but when the bus was about to reach the border the money collector told me that the bus doesn’t cross the border. I’m not sure if it was a scam or was supposed to be like that. All the locals did that way so I wasn’t too annoyed though. So, after we went through the Belizean immigration the bus took us to the bridge and from there we all had to cross the bridge to the Mexican immigration point (about 50m walk), once all done I took a public bus that was waiting there and it cost me 12 pesos to Chetumal.
Just on a different note, there is another company running between Belize city to Caye Caulker/San Pedro called Ocean Ferry. It was a lot cheaper than San Pedro express. Belize City to CC was $19BZ one way and $29 return and to SP was $29 one way and $49 return. The service between CC and SP was also $19 one way whereas San Pedro express was $30.

Thank you for the information, but I don’t think your experience is really an update.

Not all buses go all the way to Chetumal, and the BZ$10 fare you were charged is consistent with a trip only as far as the border. The fare to Chetumal is closer to BZ$12. So you weren’t scammed.

Those Mexican buses run between the border and Chetumal about every 30 minutes, and the fare is the same as I have paid.

I’ve already posted the information about Ocean Ferry. They started after Caye Caulker Water Taxi ceased operation a couple of months ago.

      Thank you for your feedback.

This blog is amazing. Period. Quick question: Is the info regarding travel from Dangriga to Hopkins village still accurate? (weekday trips at 10:15 am and 5:15 pm) Headed there for our anniversary in a couple weeks.

I don’t know. I haven’t had any updates on that route since October 2016, but the schedule has not changed in many years.

In this case, I rely on travellers’ feedback, so please let me know if you encounter any changes.
