I think all north-bound buses go to Dangriga.
However, passengers can get off at the turn-off to Dangriga and transfer to another bus heading north after coming from Dangriga.
But if there isn’t a bus already waiting or coming from Dangriga, you could end up getting back on the same bus.

Thank you for this useful site. As a Peace Corps volunteer traveling all over Belize this is very helpful. I wonder if you have a phone number for the Valencia bus line? I am putting together a cost list between towns and don’t know how much the Valencia bus line is from CZL to BMP, CZL to BNQ and OW to BNQ. Do you know? Thank you!

I haven’t got the phone number and couldn’t find it in the phone book.
I don’t know the fares, but they would be similar to the fares with the other bus lines.

There has always been a “no standing” rule, but it is seldom enforced. Every couple of years, the authorities get aggresive for a week or two, then it’s back to normal.
I’ve been on buses packed with standing passengers, and have gone through checkpoints after being inspected.
I’ve also been on buses where standing passengers had to get off the bus at a checkpoint 4 miles from Belize City.
I’ve also had half-full buses go right past me because the diver just didn’t feel like stopping.
If a bus has standing passengers, and the driver approaches a checkpoint, the driver will tell passengers to squeeze 3 or 4 people onto one seat. No problem. A mile past the checkpoint, the passengers return to standing up.
I prefer to wait for buses at a terminal rather than the side of a road.

What its the bus schedule like for April 22 for Good friday????
Thank you.
2011/02/25 at 14:12 |
On previous Good Fridays, I have observed buses on the Western Highway. They seemed to be about every hour, but be aware the number of runs might be reduced from the regular schedule, and they might start operating later than usual, or stop operating earlier than usual.

Hi,
All the schedules that I know are on the site.
The Premier express buses stopped operating in November 2010, and I haven’t heard if they have started again.
In the last update from Mundo Maya Travel (a few days ago), the San Juan express bus (BC – Chetumal) wasn’t included on the list of schedules, so now I’m not sure of that bus.
If you find out anything, kindly let me know.
Thank you.

Hi,
Is it possible to be picked up by a James Bus on the Hummingbird Highway? I’m just wondering if I can use the bus to visit Caves Branch for a day and get back to Belmopan, where I will be staying.
Thanks,
Matt
2011/06/29 at 17:46 |
Hi Matt,
Yes, the James bus (and any other bus) will stop if it’s a Regular (i.e. non-express) run.
Only the express buses will not stop.

Kudos to you for taking the time and energy to maintain this blog. I will be in Cancun and plan to go to Belize on my own starting on Sept 7 through Setp 10. I have to be back in Cancun for my return flight on Sept 11. I have been on the Ado bus website – it looks pretty efficient. My question is – is it safe for a woman alone to travel by bus from Cancun to Belize and back? Any suggestions about time of day to travel, etc. Thanks for your response.
2011/08/04 at 14:19 |
I find the Yucatan region very safe place to travel for anyone, whether you’re on buses or in cities & towns. Obviously, you still need some common sense about safety. If you’re in Chetumal or Playa, you’ll see families out walking until quite late at night. I see single women all the time on the ADO buses.
In Belize, you should be OK at any time on buses — hold-ups are very rare, you just have to watch your luggage, and the ever present sweet talking Belizean male who will tell you that you are the most beautiful woman he’s ever met — most are harmless, but be wary.
Most Belizean buses stop running before about 11 pm, and it’s the area around some bus terminals where it might be less safe, in particular, Belize City.
My usual bit of advice is to use taxis always at night in Belize, never walk alone, never walk anywhere where there are no other people.

I am flying into Cancun September 9 or 11 and would like to take advantage of the new ADO service to Belize City that I read about here. I believe it leaves Cancun terminal at 10:15 PM. I am not fluent in Spanish and cannot determine from the ADO website if it stops at the Cancun airport enroute to Belize. Does this bus run 7 days per week? How long does it take to get from the airport to the Cancun bus terminal?
2011/09/08 at 14:27 |
After going through Customs, there should be an ADO representative in that area of the airport (before you exit the building). He will sell you a ticket for a shuttle bus to the ADO terminal in Cancun City (the price was given as US$15 which seems high to me, but a taxi is about US$60, also seems high). The trip to Cancun bus terminal is about 30 minutes.
At the ticket counter, buy a ticket to Belize City — MX$474 or about US$39. Departure is daily at 10:15 pm.
The bus will stop at Playa del Carmen and Tulum, and reach the border at about 3:30 am.
Remember, there are no departure fees to pay when leaving Mexico, though you might be asked to pay.
After crossing the bridge, go through Belize Immigration & Customs — nothing to pay.
Arrive in Belize City at about 6:30 am.

Thanks for providing this service. Do you know if there is a bus out of the Northern districts that cuts over the Boom cutoff to Belmopan?
2011/10/26 at 07:16 |
Yes.
The only one I know is the Valencia bus that departs from Corozal at around 3am and goes to Benque. It bypasses BC by going along the Boom Road and it will stop for passengers along the route.
2012/01/17 at 18:49 |
Hi would like to know what time the last bus leave Belize heading to Benque? Thanks
2012/01/17 at 19:52 |
For many years, the last bus to Benque left the Belize City bus terminal at 9:00 pm.
Then one of the bus companies added a bus that departed at 9:30 pm. There was still a bus that departed at 9pm.
Then, last year, the schedules were revised and I don’t know about the 9:30pm bus. I haven’t seen the new schedule (they don’t get published), but you can probably rely on the 9pm bus.

My travel book says the last bus to San Ignacio leaves at 5:30 but you’re saying I could catch one later? I’m arriving at the airport late afternoon so want to make sure I don’t need to arrange a shuttle. Thanks so much for the information!
2012/01/27 at 15:35 |
Hi Kate,
Yes, the guide book is wrong. Which one is it?
There are buses every half hour until 9:00 pm.
2012/01/27 at 15:52
Thanks so much. I was looking in the Lonely Planet guide, 2011. Thanks!
2012/01/27 at 16:08
Thanks. Is there a link to BelizeBus in the LP guide?

Is there any way to get to Belize City from Chetumal in the evening?
If yes…How?
Than you.
2012/04/17 at 12:46 |
Yes, here are your options…
1. Arrange one of the transfer services to pick you up in Chetumal and take you to BC.
2. If you want to go by bus, the last bus to BC departs from Corozal at 7:15 pm. The last bus from Chetumal to Corozal is sometime between 6 & 7 pm. If you can’t get a Belizean bus from Chetumal, get a Chetumal taxi (MX$70) or bus (MX$10) as far as the border, walk across the border, and then get a Belizean bus (BZ$2) or taxi (BZ$20 to $25) to Corozal.
3. Taxis.
4. Tropic Air or Maya Isand Air from Corozal. The last flight is sometime around 5 or 6 pm (check the schedules).

hi could you tell me if i can book a trip from berlize to cheumal on line as i need a cheap ticket to show immagration as a onward ticket.
2012/10/07 at 20:44 |
The buses that operate between Belize & Chetumal are Belizean buses and can not be booked online.
The overnight ADO bus that operates between Belize and Cancun does not stop in Chetumal. You might think about booking a ticket from Belize City (or one of the other stops in Belize) to Tulum, but the ADO site doesn’t show the BC to Cancun run (or at least it didn’t the last time I looked).
There are 2 water taxis that operate between Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. You might be able to book a ticket through their websites.
I don’t think you will need an onward ticket — just say that you are travelling by bus.

Thanks for this amazing collection of data. I have a question you can probably answer. What is the time period required by Mexico when you leave on an expired FMM before you can return and get a new one? Thanks in advance.
2012/10/30 at 10:01 |
I think it is officially 3 days (or 72 hours). I’ve met people who have come to Belize and stayed that long before returning to Mexico.
However, I’ve also heard of people who have stayed outside Mexico for only 1 night and one person reported on this forum that he got a new FMM at the border without even leaving Mexico.

Hello. I might be missing the obvious so my apologies upfront. I am looking for bus or shuttle information from Belize City to Flores (and the return). What companies go there? Is there an express bus? How long does it take? How much does it cost?
Thank you for your help.
2012/11/27 at 19:59 |
Hi Sharon,
Yes, somehow you have missed the obvious. Just scroll down to Section 9. TRANSPORTATION BETWEEN BELIZE AND GUATEMALA, and you’ll find the information about the 3 express buses to Flores.

I’ll see you in January. I’ll be walking alone, day or night.

I propise to come to Belmopan and stay at the El Rey Inn. Having just looked at the cost of the airport shuttle which only goes as far as Belmopan city and there is a two minute walk from Belmopan to the El Rey Inn, can yuou advise me on the costs os buses and shuttle services. It seems very expensive for the shuttle service and I have been quoted $93 . I am wondering if I should change my destination from Belmopan to Belize City or if I should abandon my plans altogether. I am single and will be travelling alone. I will be coming from September 10 to 23 this year. Can you advise me p[lease.
2013/01/18 at 12:44 |
There are no buses from the airport. A taxi to the bus terminal in Belize City is BZ$50 (US$25). A bus from BC to Belmopan is about BZ$5.
The shuttle price seems reasonable to me. I don’t think you’ll find that’s significantly cheaper.
Why have you chosen to stay in Belmopan? It’s usually not high on any tourist’s list of places to visit.
2013/01/18 at 14:56
If you’re on vacation, Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, or Placencia would be nice places to visit. Richie Bus service out of Placencia now runs an A/C express, Monday to Saturday from Belize City to Placencia at 3:30 PM for $20.BZ. It returns to Belize City at 6:15AM. Monday to Saturday. The ferry to Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker leaves from downtown Belize City, I’m not sure of the price. You can also fly from the International airport direct to San Pedro (Ambergris Caye), Placencia or Belmopan with Tropic Air or Maya Air. Exact schedules and fares are on their websites.
2013/01/19 at 12:20
Thanks for the information about the bus. I had heard of the bus but didn’t post because I didn’t have the schedule.
Do you know if it stops at Dangriga?
2013/01/19 at 15:55
The express bus from Placencia to Belize City does not stop in Dangriga. It does stop in Belmopan.
2013/01/19 at 18:55
Thanks.
2013/02/17 at 17:01 |
For the Ritchie express from BC to Placencia, we were wanting to catch it in Belmopan. ( we are coming from SI). Do we need tickets in advance? Do we get those on the bus and just show up there? Thanks
2013/02/17 at 19:12 |
I don’t think it’s possible to buy tickets in advance. Pay the Conductor on the bus.
2013/03/26 at 13:41 |
Just curious what bus and what time I could catch if I’m heading north out of placencia and wanting to end up at belize city in time to catch the ado night bus? Thanks.
2013/03/26 at 16:24 |
Option 1.
Get the Hokey Pokey ferry from Placencia to Independence to get either the 12:00 noon or 2:00 pm James Bus Lines bus to Belize City (confirm the Hokey Pokey and James bus schedules at the Placencia Tourism Office). No bus changes are necessary during the bus trip. The 2pm bus will arrive in BC at 6:30 — if it was me, I’d get the earlier bus in case the buses run late. And getting to BC early gives you a better chance to secure a seat on the ADO bus if it’s busy, and find something to eat.
Option 2.
Get any bus (check the Ritchie’s schedule on their website) from Placencia to Dangriga. Change to another bus. You could get the James Bus at Dangriga at 1:30 or 3:30 and go to Belize City, or get another bus line to Belmopan and change again for a bus to BC. Remember, the more changes you have, the more time you need and will have to start earlier.

Thank you for all the information. I was researching the scam “Mexico Departure Tax” and ran across you great research. I also happened upon this that I though you might find helpfu in the event you haven’t seen itl: http://embamex.sre.gob.mx/belice/index.php/en/activities-a-notices/726
I am traveling by ADO bus from Tulum, Mexico to Belize City. I will let you know the border officials response to showing this print out from the Embassy along with documentation that I arrived to Mexico via air.
Again thanks for the great information!
2013/04/30 at 12:16 |
Thanks for this.
I see the last update was November 2012. I had searched that site prior to that date, but had not found that page.
It is also dated after a press release last year stating that the airlines were no longer authorized to collect the fee, so that press release may have been bogus.
I look forward to your report after going to Belize.

Thanks for such a great site! I am arriving in the Belize City airport with a group of twenty-five. How can I rent a bus to take us to San Ignacio?
2013/05/17 at 18:30 |
You could contact one of the bus companies. I don’t have any phone numbers but you can try the telephone e-directory…

You can also try the transfer services.
