Hello,
What a terrific site. Thank you so much for your hard work. Is there a bus that will pick up in Placencia and travel North without going back to Dangria?
Thanks in advance for your time and help.

I think all north-bound buses go to Dangriga.
However, passengers can get off at the turn-off to Dangriga and transfer to another bus heading north after coming from Dangriga.
But if there isn’t a bus already waiting or coming from Dangriga, you could end up getting back on the same bus.

But keep in mind, with new stricter enforcement of laws against standing in buses, the bus could fill up in dangriga and be too full to pick you up when it gets back to the so. Hwy junction.

There has always been a “no standing” rule, but it is seldom enforced. Every couple of years, the authorities get aggresive for a week or two, then it’s back to normal.
I’ve been on buses packed with standing passengers, and have gone through checkpoints after being inspected.
I’ve also been on buses where standing passengers had to get off the bus at a checkpoint 4 miles from Belize City.
I’ve also had half-full buses go right past me because the diver just didn’t feel like stopping.
If a bus has standing passengers, and the driver approaches a checkpoint, the driver will tell passengers to squeeze 3 or 4 people onto one seat. No problem. A mile past the checkpoint, the passengers return to standing up.
I prefer to wait for buses at a terminal rather than the side of a road.

What its the bus schedule like for April 22 for Good friday????
Thank you.
2011/02/25 at 14:12 |
On previous Good Fridays, I have observed buses on the Western Highway. They seemed to be about every hour, but be aware the number of runs might be reduced from the regular schedule, and they might start operating later than usual, or stop operating earlier than usual.

Hi,
All the schedules that I know are on the site.
The Premier express buses stopped operating in November 2010, and I haven’t heard if they have started again.
In the last update from Mundo Maya Travel (a few days ago), the San Juan express bus (BC – Chetumal) wasn’t included on the list of schedules, so now I’m not sure of that bus.
If you find out anything, kindly let me know.
Thank you.

Hi,
Is it possible to be picked up by a James Bus on the Hummingbird Highway? I’m just wondering if I can use the bus to visit Caves Branch for a day and get back to Belmopan, where I will be staying.
Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt,
Yes, the James bus (and any other bus) will stop if it’s a Regular (i.e. non-express) run.
Only the express buses will not stop.

Kudos to you for taking the time and energy to maintain this blog. I will be in Cancun and plan to go to Belize on my own starting on Sept 7 through Setp 10. I have to be back in Cancun for my return flight on Sept 11. I have been on the Ado bus website – it looks pretty efficient. My question is – is it safe for a woman alone to travel by bus from Cancun to Belize and back? Any suggestions about time of day to travel, etc. Thanks for your response.

I find the Yucatan region very safe place to travel for anyone, whether you’re on buses or in cities & towns. Obviously, you still need some common sense about safety. If you’re in Chetumal or Playa, you’ll see families out walking until quite late at night. I see single women all the time on the ADO buses.
In Belize, you should be OK at any time on buses — hold-ups are very rare, you just have to watch your luggage, and the ever present sweet talking Belizean male who will tell you that you are the most beautiful woman he’s ever met — most are harmless, but be wary.
Most Belizean buses stop running before about 11 pm, and it’s the area around some bus terminals where it might be less safe, in particular, Belize City.
My usual bit of advice is to use taxis always at night in Belize, never walk alone, never walk anywhere where there are no other people.

I am flying into Cancun September 9 or 11 and would like to take advantage of the new ADO service to Belize City that I read about here. I believe it leaves Cancun terminal at 10:15 PM. I am not fluent in Spanish and cannot determine from the ADO website if it stops at the Cancun airport enroute to Belize. Does this bus run 7 days per week? How long does it take to get from the airport to the Cancun bus terminal?

After going through Customs, there should be an ADO representative in that area of the airport (before you exit the building). He will sell you a ticket for a shuttle bus to the ADO terminal in Cancun City (the price was given as US$15 which seems high to me, but a taxi is about US$60, also seems high). The trip to Cancun bus terminal is about 30 minutes.
At the ticket counter, buy a ticket to Belize City — MX$474 or about US$39. Departure is daily at 10:15 pm.
The bus will stop at Playa del Carmen and Tulum, and reach the border at about 3:30 am.
Remember, there are no departure fees to pay when leaving Mexico, though you might be asked to pay.
After crossing the bridge, go through Belize Immigration & Customs — nothing to pay.
Arrive in Belize City at about 6:30 am.

Thanks for providing this service. Do you know if there is a bus out of the Northern districts that cuts over the Boom cutoff to Belmopan?
2011/10/26 at 07:16 |
Yes.
The only one I know is the Valencia bus that departs from Corozal at around 3am and goes to Benque. It bypasses BC by going along the Boom Road and it will stop for passengers along the route.

Hi would like to know what time the last bus leave Belize heading to Benque? Thanks
2012/01/17 at 19:52 |
For many years, the last bus to Benque left the Belize City bus terminal at 9:00 pm.
Then one of the bus companies added a bus that departed at 9:30 pm. There was still a bus that departed at 9pm.
Then, last year, the schedules were revised and I don’t know about the 9:30pm bus. I haven’t seen the new schedule (they don’t get published), but you can probably rely on the 9pm bus.

My travel book says the last bus to San Ignacio leaves at 5:30 but you’re saying I could catch one later? I’m arriving at the airport late afternoon so want to make sure I don’t need to arrange a shuttle. Thanks so much for the information!

Hi Kate,
Yes, the guide book is wrong. Which one is it?
There are buses every half hour until 9:00 pm.

Thanks so much. I was looking in the Lonely Planet guide, 2011. Thanks!

Thanks. Is there a link to BelizeBus in the LP guide?
